Modern cars are quieter than ever. Thanks to decades of engineering, testing, aerodynamic development, vibration control, and improved sound insulation, today’s vehicles are designed to move through the air with remarkably little noise.
The rise of electric vehicles has taken that quiet driving experience to another level. With almost no engine noise inside the cabin, sounds that were once hidden by the engine can suddenly become much easier to notice. That includes wind noise from a roof rack.
If you install crossbars, side rails, a bike carrier, cargo basket, surfboard rack, or another accessory on top of a vehicle, you are adding something to an aerodynamic shape that engineers spent years refining. So some additional wind noise should be expected.
The good news is that excessive whistling or turbulence can often be reduced significantly with a few simple adjustments.
Yes, roof racks can create some extra wind noise, especially at highway speeds. How much noise a roof rack makes depends on the vehicle, crossbar design, position of the bars, driving speed, and any accessories mounted on the rack.
A properly designed aerodynamic roof rack should not create excessive noise, but some additional airflow sound is normal. If you hear a strong whistle, humming, or unusually loud wind noise, there are several things you can check and adjust.
Why Do Roof Racks Make Wind Noise?
When you install roof rack crossbars, you are adding something to the carefully designed airflow over the vehicle. Air now has to travel around the crossbars, and this can create turbulence and additional sound.
This does not necessarily mean there is something wrong with your roof rack.
In fact, roof rack wind noise may seem more noticeable in an electric vehicle simply because the vehicle itself is so quiet.
How Much Extra Noise Does a Roof Rack Make?
There is no single number because every vehicle and roof rack combination is different.
At lower speeds, you may not notice any difference difference. At highway speeds, the airflow becomes much stronger and roof rack noise usually becomes more noticeable.
Aerodynamic crossbars generally produce less noise than large, square, or poorly positioned bars. Accessories such as bike racks, kayak carriers, cargo baskets, roof boxes, and loose straps can also increase wind noise.

1. Check the Rubber Strips
If your roof rack makes a noticeable whistling sound, start by checking the rubber strips inside the aluminum crossbars. The rubber strip should completely cover the open channel. Even a small uncovered section can allow air to enter the channel and create a whistle at higher speeds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojTCM0h90q0Make sure the strip is fully seated, properly positioned, and not damaged.
2. Adjust the Front Crossbar Position
The front crossbar receives the strongest airflow and is often the main source of roof rack wind noise. If your roof rack mounting system allows adjustment, try moving the front crossbar approximately 1 to 2 inches toward the rear of the vehicle. A small change in position can significantly change how air reaches the bar. Always keep the crossbar centered and straight, and securely tighten all mounting points after making an adjustment.
3. Try the Spiral Rope Method
Another simple solution is to wrap a rope around the front crossbar in a spiral pattern. The spiral interrupts the steady airflow around the crossbar and can reduce the vibration or humming caused by the wind. Wrap the rope evenly across the front bar with some space between each turn. Secure both ends tightly and keep the rope away from the mounting hardware. It may look simple, but it can be a surprisingly useful way to identify and reduce aerodynamic noise.
4. Use a Wind Fairing
A compatible roof rack wind fairing can also help. A fairing redirects air over the front crossbar instead of allowing the airflow to hit it directly. This can reduce turbulence and roof rack wind noise, particularly at highway speeds. Make sure the fairing is compatible with your roof rack and securely installed before driving.
5. Check Your Roof Rack Accessories
Sometimes the crossbars are not actually causing the noise. Bike carriers, kayak mounts, cargo baskets, roof boxes, load stops, and especially loose straps can create additional humming, whistling, or vibration. If the noise started after adding an accessory, temporarily remove it and test the vehicle again. This is one of the easiest ways to identify the source.
Is Roof Rack Noise Normal?
Some roof rack wind noise is completely normal. When you add crossbars to a vehicle traveling at highway speed, air must move around them. Even the most aerodynamic roof rack will affect airflow slightly.
The important difference is between normal airflow noise and excessive whistling or vibration. If the sound seems unusually loud, check the rubber strips, front crossbar position, accessories, and mounting points. Then test one adjustment at a time until you find the best setup for your vehicle.
